Marissa Nadler presents new video of her Townes Van Zandt Cover „Quicksilver Daydreams Of Maria“!

This march Townes Van Zandt would have turned 77 and his music still touches people. On July 1, My Proud Mountain releases „Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol. III“. Another album on which no less than Amenra, Cave In and Marissa Nadler cover a selection of his songs, as homage to the songwriting genius that he was.

The new single „Quicksilver Dreams of Maria“, and also the album’s opener, features Nadler in a daydream with wistful siren vocals that embody the lovelorn and lusty side of Townes Van Zandt that some listeners tend to overlook.

“I wanted to shine a light on some of Townes Van Zandt’s lesser known, but equally excellent songs from his vast body of work.” sagt Nadler. “His deeply romantic lyrical tendencies are intricately displayed on the three songs that I chose, as well as the pervasive loneliness and deep-seated sadness, always waiting right outside the door.”

Marissa Nadler also says about the song:
„This song is so intense. The words roll off his tongue- such a great lyrical flow. I remember when I first heard this song, I felt like I had always known it. It felt ancient and eternal…. Maria becomes a mythical figure in this song. She’s powerful, she’s a presence or a ghost, it’s hard to tell- the line between reality and fantasy is so beautifully blurred.“

Here is the video of Quicksilver Dreams of Maria“:

Amenra present video for their Townes Van Zandt cover „Kathleen“

The new video for „Kathleen“ is out now! It’s the first single by Amenra of the upcoming album „Songs Of Townes Van Zandt Vol. III“ featuring Amenra, Cave In and Marissa Nadler, which will be released on April 22nd. „Kathleen“ will officially drop tomorrow.

With „Kathleen“ the Belgian post/sludge metal collective Amenra give a first teaser of the upcoming album „Songs Of Townes Van Zandt Vol. III“. On the album Amenra will cover a total of 3 tracks by Townes Van Zandt.

While the original song is decorated with country-esque strings expressing something between longing and lament, Amenra have created a version where the strings are much more reminiscent of the atmosphere at a funeral, the Van Zandt-typical fingerpicking is being more emphasized and singer Colin H. van Eeckhout intones the lyrics with a bright voice on the fine line between hope and despair.

Amenra reduce their familiar sludge metal sound to vocals and acoustic guitar in the three songs selected to pay tribute to the tortured soul at the center of Van Zandt’s work.

„The sadness and despair in his songs are unparalleled,“ says guitarist Lennart Bossu. „We recorded the songs with Gilles Demolder, in his little studio, where he added keys and atmospheres to „Kathleen“ Bossu continues. „After working a little bit on tempos and composition, we surrendered to the songs, and tried to get as close to Townes‘ original intention as we could.“

Check out the video to „Kathleen“ here:

Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol. III – Birthday + Announcement

On todays birthday of Townes van Zandt who died in 1997 My Proud Mountain is thrilled to announce Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol. III, continuing the tradition of well-known artists in the heavy music and dark genres covering the songs of Townes Van Zandt.

The LP features nine new and unique covers by Amenra, Cave In, and Marissa Nadler – three songs are performed by each artist.

If you are interested to write or post something about the release please let us know and we will send you files to listen to the record. All artists are available for interviews and we would be excited to work on this with you.

Info:
Opener “Quicksilver Dreams of Maria” paints Nadler, as a pastoral daydream of mournful siren vocals, embodying the lovelorn and lustful side of Van Zandt some listeners tend to overlook. “I wanted to shine a light on some of Townes Van Zandt’s lesser known, but equally excellent songs from his vast body of work,” says Nadler. “His deeply romantic lyrical tendencies are intricately displayed on the three songs that I chose, as well as the pervasive loneliness and deep-seated sadness, always waiting right outside the door.”

Her covers of “Sad Cinderella” and “None But the Rain” capture the tender and weary surrender to hope in the face of turmoil, like a flower blooming on a gravestone. The melodic and rhythmic contributions of Milky Burgess help make the covers a hazy carnival of memories that may be real or imagined, depending on where your eyes are following the setting sun over the hillside. “I recorded the songs at my home studio, with an intimate close-mic approach, and tried to be as raw as I could with them. The feeling that Townes is singing right in your ear, standing right next to you, comforting you – that is what I love about so many of his recordings. His attack and delivery go straight to the heart.”

Amenra strip back their sludge metal sound to just vocals and acoustic guitar to pay tribute to the tortured soul at the center of Van Zandt’s work. “The sadness and despair in his songs are unparalleled,” says guitarist Lennart Bossu. Tackling “Kathleen”, “Flyin’ Shoes”, and the eerie “Black Crow Blues”, Amenra shine a light on the real pain that made Van Zandt’s lyrics all the more haunting. “We recorded the songs with Gilles Demolder, in his little studio, where he added keys and atmospheres to “Kathleen” and “Flyin’ Shoes,” continues Bossu. “After working a little bit on tempos and composition, we surrendered to the songs, and tried to get as close to Townes’ original intention as we could.” The result is the Texas desert by way of Belgium, a set of stark and emotionally raw ballads for long night drives to nowhere.

“We’re gonna play another cover here,” says Cave In’s Stephen Brodsky from the Roadburn Festival stage in April 2018, a slight Texas twang escaping his mouth in anticipation of what comes next. “We’re gonna do a Townes Van Zandt song.” He and fellow Cave In guitarist Adam McGrath then launch into “Nothin’”, turning Van Zandt’s withering and detached anthem of forced sobriety and solitude into a proclamation of goodwill and tender absolution to a friend in the afterlife – departed Cave In bassist Caleb Scofield. “Caleb was a big fan of Townes Van Zandt, so we did it in remembrance of our friend,” says Brodsky. “When we think of Townes, we also think of Caleb – that’s the heavy shit.”

Cave In’s full-band covers of “The Hole” and “At My Window” find them at their most cavernous, slowing down their high-wire sound to a sidewinder crawl to navigate the claustrophobic darkness. “I heard what Marissa Nadler and Amenra did with their covers, and it convinced me to go back to the drawing board,” says Brodsky. “It was pretty obvious that traditional-sounding Cave In versions of Townes Van Zandt wouldn’t work in this context.”

At nearly 7-minutes long, their doomed-out cover of “The Hole” is as black as west Texas midnight. “Our version was recorded mostly remotely – it started with me just singing and playing keys at the same time. I’m not sure there’s any other Cave In recording out there without me playing guitar,” continues Brodsky.”

For their cover of “At My Window”, Brodsky says, “We actually recorded 3 or 4 different versions. We eventually turned down the volume and slowed the tempo, with everyone going a little further outside their comfort zones to achieve something that would blend well with the other contributions. The Swans vibe that we eventually settled on seems to have garnered the best result for this application.”

It’s likely that today’s digital landscape of plug-and-play creative freedom would have benefited an artist as fiercely committed to independence as Townes Van Zandt. My Proud Mountain is delighted to use today’s technology to help artists create an LP of covers that showcase his sad, brilliant, and highly influential music that continues to touch people the world over to this day.

Tesa presents C O N T R O L visuals on Roadburn Redux between April 16-18.

One more My Proud Mountain artist on Roadburn redux 2021.

TESA released their hypnotic album C O N T R O L last year and we were enraptured. Roadburn Redux will present the album with an exclusive element in the form of the accompanying visuals – originally designed to be part of a live show – that add an extra dynamic to the already mesmerising album.

The band say: “We are deeply honored and privileged to be a part of an event with such a history, passion and significant meaning for everyone who holds dear broad forms of heavy and unconventional music. With these uncertain times and lack of attendance possibility, it even more stands out as the highlight of this year’s musical (and not only) experience, and having a chance to contribute is tremendous.”

Steve Von Till will perform A Remote Wilderness as part of Roadburn Redux between April 16-18.

lets just listen to what the roadburn festival announced today:

We go way back…

It was 2007 when Neurosis made their Roadburn debut, and over the years we’ve welcomed them back with open arms and in many guises, multiple times. Steve Von Till has performed at Roadburn as part of Neurosis, as a curator, as a solo artist, and a guest musician – and now he will be performing for us within a digital realm as part of Roadburn Redux.

Filmed and recorded live at the legendary Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, we’re delighted to be able to present to you a Steve Von Till performance titled A Remote Wilderness. If you’re anything like us you will have spent many a contemplative hour with his latest album No Wilderness Deep Enough, so it will be a joy to see it brought to life. Joined by a dynamic group of Seattle based musicians Von Till will perform the album in its entirety – with a few older songs woven throughout.

Von Till will handle vocals, piano and guitar for the performance, and will be joined by Dave French (Brothers of the Sonic Cloth) on synthesizer, percussion, guitar and backing vocals, Lori Goldston (Nirvana, Earth) on cello, David Lutz on synthesizer, Eric Padget on French horn, and Olie Eshleman on pedal steel. The visual element will be captured by Bobby Cochran, whose work you may know from Amenra’s A Flood of Light documentary.

From our side, we view our connection to his work from a foundation of deep respect, admiration and – most of all – friendship. Although this year the miles may separate us, we’re looking forward to communing, with Steve’s wonderful, emotive music as the soundtrack.

Steve Von Till will perform A Remote Wilderness as part of Roadburn Redux between April 16-18.

Neurosis | European Tour 2019 guest reveal

Neurosis are pleased to add label-mates Kowloon Walled City as support across their European tour dates this summer, joining YOB who are also part of this fantastic billing. Ufomammut who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year will be joining on the two opening shows in Italy.

Last we heard from Kowloon Walled City was around their third album release (and first for Neurot), Grievances, which saw the San Francisco band at their artistic peak, having moved even further away from its sludgy, post-hardcore origins and toward a sparser, sadder, yet still de-tuned heaviness. The strings rattle. The guitars crackle and blister. The notes ring out, at turns bleak and beautiful—sometimes both at once. Live dates are listed below.

Denver Broncos UK | European Tour 2019

photo2018 low

The Denver Broncos UK (DBUK for short) consist of Munly Munly, Lord Dwight Pentacost, Rebecca Vera and Slim Cessna from Slim Cessna’s Auto Club in Denver, Colorado. In contrast to the rousing sounds of SCAC, they produce a sound that is much more subtle, sensitive and intimate, with many strings and percussions reminiscent of a rural, pre-industrial era.

As the album title „Songs One Through Sixteen“ already says, the new full-length consists of no less than 16 songs (!), Gothic Americana in a class of its own. A beautifully spooky brand of pure acoustic fabric that inevitably sends shivers down the backs of the most experienced fans.

See them live:
18.02. DE – Mannheim – Geschichtswerkstatt Altes Volksbad
20.02. DE – Oberhausen – Druckluft

TESA | 10th Anniversary of Heartbeatsfromthesky

tesa.bw1

Latvian experimental metal trio Tesa is celebrating 10th anniversary of their 2008 album Heartbeatsfromthesky with vinyl re-release of the record and a special show in their hometown Riga on 13. december – exactly 10 years after the record was released. The band will play whole album in it`s entity exactly as it was 10 years ago.

Tesa mentions Heartbatsfromthesky as a gamechanger record for the band – it sets the margin of bands maturity and was a creative peak of that time and captures all bands capabilities in best possible way – huge, destructive and immersive riffs, countless layers of noisy and melodic guitars contrasting with feathery soundscapes.

After HBFTS Tesa has recorded 2 more albums – IV (2012), Ghost (2015) and has played countless shows in Latvia, Europe, Russia and also in Uganda, Africa on 2018. Tesa opened for Neurosis on their 2016 European tour.
While getting ready for anniversary Tesa has also started working on their new album with their long time companion Girts Lomix Laumans. It is too early to set the release date but the process is in mixing stage now.

Peter Wolff | Lone Series | Swarm

we are really excited to present you „LONE SERIES“ from Peter Wolff (ex-DOWNFALL OF GAIA). A new set of individual songs spreading different atmospheres and ideas. Available only online on all common platforms.„SWARM“ is the first part of this new series and is released as audio and video.
Reflecting the mass crashing down on us everyday, the mass of people, human creations, feelings and impacts, suppressing our needs for rest and silence. With dark and perplexing beats burrowing deep through black sludge, this song will take you right into the center of a crushing SWARM.

Check this first dark, drone dealing, heavy-weight ambient video of „Lone Series“ right HERE via YouTube!

Biography:
After gaining fundamental experiences in several guitardriven bands for many years, Peter Wolff became a founding member of the spheric black metal band „Downfall of Gaia“. Being one of their main songwriters, he highly influenced the sound and forged it to its acclaimed mixture of raging black metal speed and athmospheric dreamlike soundscapes.

Downfall of Gaias output was received well by worldwide listeners as well as by the musicindustry. Thus, they released two Albums on one of the worlds biggest record labels for hard sounds „Metal Blade Records“ and toured every continent, including countries like the USA, Russia, Australia and Japan. After 8 years, he felt that it was time for him to head towards different sonic shores and he left the band in peace and mutual respect.

The new work of multi-instrumentalist Peter Wolff is dominated by spheric and moviescore like sounds, reducing the distorted guitar and opening up for piano, synthesizers, strings and some well placed drums. The result presents fluent and hypnotizing acoustic sculptures to the listener. Names like Max Richter, Johann Johannsson or Bohren & der Club of Gore come to your mind while enjoying Peters latest compositions though his creation has its unique flavour and leads you to musical pathes you have never walked before.

I See What I Became will see release on CD, digital, and vinyl formats on September 28th with preorders available at THIS LOCATION.

View the album trailer, courtesy of Chariot Of Black Moth, at THIS LOCATION.

I See What I Became Track Listing:
1. Animal Coffins
2. Tomb Puncher
3. Body Ash
4. Flat Rats In The Alley
5. Thing Of Knives
6. Crooked Teeth
7. Death Cart
8. Coward Heat

As a precursor to the album’s release, MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE will play two very special shows later this month supporting industrial titans Godflesh in Chicago and New York City respectively with future MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE live abrasions, including a European tour this fall, to be announced in the weeks to come.

MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE w/ Godflesh:
8/24/2018 Metro – Chicago, IL w/ Harm’s Way, Ledge [tickets]
8/25/2018 Gramercy Theater, New York, NY w/ Tombs, Body Stuff [tickets]

It’s been three rough years since MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE sprang into existence with their startling self-titled debut, but don’t think for a second that the time was spent idle, this unit — comprised of Neurosis’ Scott Kelly and producer Sanford Parker — constructed an even more unnerving and destructive record with I See What I Became. I know; hard to believe.

Over the course of these eight bile-rich pieces, a sonic abattoir is erected, exploited, and razed. Turbulence rises and churns giving way to rhythmic machinations, lights flicker, a grand mal/guignol seizure besets a frog-headed snitch, blood collects in a stainless-steel gutter. Claustrophobic sudor that evokes all you held dear from Skinny Puppy, Foetus, Godflesh, bath tub tina, and wondering where the fuck you will sleep, provided you ever do. There’s nothing fun here; nothing but the cold of an autopsy followed by the heat of a crematorium. A sliver of galvanized bone flies from a circular saw into the toothless maw of a streetwalking Kali Yuga. Good or bad, I’m not sure what we did to deserve this. [words by Aesop Dekker]

“I started with songwriting on the dying day of a close friend (…)” Peter Wolff – Repeat LP/CD/DL out now.

Peter Release Post Bild v2

Former Downfall Of Gaia mastermind Peter Wolff releases his first solo album „Repeat“ today.
Dominated by spheric and moviescore like sounds, reducing the distorted guitar and opening up for piano, synthesizers, strings and some well-placed drums Repeat is a real personal and emotional album recorded by Peter Wolff. Peter Wolff about the album: „I started with songwriting on the dying day of a close friend and after exactly one year I stopped on the point where I was. This record describes one year of coping with bereavement, the wander around grief, abyss and solace and ends with the insight that this will repeat again and again and will never end.“

MPM announces signing of Spotlights to there Booking Roster

Spotlights Photo for Press_small

We are proud to welcome our new band Spotlights to our booking roster.

Spotlights are Brooklyn-based husband and wife Mario and Sarah Quintero: they just released their album “Seismic” early October 2017 on Ipecac reccords and we will book their first European tour for April 2018.

„Doomgaze“ ist what media used to describe the new Album. Yep, Doomgaze. You want more? Here we go:
„Doomgaze is a sound that requires a very tricky balancing act. Both styles on their own have the ability to wring a ton of emotion out of ethereal soundscapes, but without the right amount of soul behind it, doom and shoegaze can become boring much faster than the styles’ slow tempos. Brooklyn-based husband and wife duo Spotlights must be acrobats, as their Ipecac debut (and second overall) is a stunning listening experience. Mammoth, earth-shattering (get it?) riffs sit atop spine-tingling ethereal atmospheres.“

„Broken Limbs Excite No Pity“ from Bruce Lamont to be release: 23.3.2018

Bruce Lamont_Broken Limbs Excite No Pity_Cover

Broken Limbs Excite No Pity, Lamont’s second solo album, is in many ways a harsher experience than Feral Songs. Tracked in Chicago’s Minbal Studios with Sanford Parker behind the board, it’s a one-man show like its predecessor—Lamont sings, harmonizing mournfully with himself, and plays saxophone, guitar, percussion, and electronics. Also like last time, it opens with an 11-minute epic; “Excite No Pity” starts out featuring multiple crying saxophones and deep, almost Bill Laswell-esque bass drones, but is ultimately overtaken by searing electronic noise. “Maclean” warps an acoustic guitar melody with tape effects, to keep it from sounding too much like a Kansas song, while “Goodbye Electric Sunday” is a unique blend of Spaghetti Western soundtrack and Beat poetry over an almost-hip-hop groove. Lamont uses his voice as an instrument almost as often as he uses it to put across his lyrics. On “Neither Spare Nor Dispose,” he wails and groans as loops of forcefully strummed acoustic guitar and rumbling percussion thunder past, and static washes over it all like a wave.

At its base, music is sound (noise, if you like) organized into patterns. And those sounds/noises don’t have to be pretty ones, as long as the patterns are compelling. Bruce Lamont understands this intuitively, and has demonstrated an ability to create hypnotic, ominous, emotionally resonant and even somehow transcendent arrangements of patterned sound. These aren’t “songs” like you hear on the radio. They’re literally sound art. This is an album you dunk your head in like a bucket of ice water, and when you pull it back out, you’re not the same person you were before

MPM announces signing of Bruce Lamont

bruce-lamont-1-Photo-by-JJ-Koczan

We are more than happy to announce and welcome Bruce Lamont to our MPM family!

When Bruce Lamont released his first solo album, Feral Songs For The Epic Decline, six years ago, he was best known as the leader of the psychedelic Chicago jazz-metal group Yakuza. Thus, that album’s morose, arty songs came as a radical departure, showing him to be just as comfortable constructing droning, Swans-like epics as exploding with industrial and black metal-inspired rage.

In the six years since, his creative journey has taken him farther and farther afield. He’s part of electronic noise-dirge squad Corrections House, with Eyehategod’s Mike IX Williams, Neurosis’s Scott Kelly, and longtime creative partner Sanford Parker; the mind-melting jazz-prog-hardcore trio Brain Tentacles, with Keelhaul bassist Aaron Dallison and grind drummer par excellence Dave Witte; and dozens of other projects, large and small, collaborating with an ever-growing network of like minds.

Stay tuned for more updates and releases of MPM & Bruce Lamont.

„REPEAT“ BY PETER WOLFF RELEASE ON 23.02.2018

PeterWolff_2

Peter Wolff, who as a founding member of the band Downfall of Gaia has already toured the world, will release his debut solo album „Repeat“ on February 23,2018 on My Proud Mountain.

„Repeat“ concentrates on compositions of electronically produced spherical, cinematic music and sound design, experimented with classical instruments such as piano, strings and orchestra. He combines all this with his roots in guitar-oriented music.

„Repeat“ is a very personal work and served for one year to process a heavy loss. „Repeat“ is the soundtrack to the constantly rotating spiral of emotionally destructive events, without digressing into miserable realms. A constant rut that moves slowly and steadily and destroys a glimmer of hope with all its strength.

„Repeat“ will be released on 23.02. as CD / LP / DL
A first, short impression can be gained in the corresponding teaser video.

Live Peter Wolff will present „Repeat“ on four gigs with Neurosis singer and guitarist Scott Kelly.

Scott Kelly (Neurosis) accompanied by John Judkins (Rwake)
Supported by Peter Wolff at the following dates:
11.01. Hamburg – MS Stubnitz
12.01. Leipzig – UT Connewitz
24.01. Darmstadt – Boys‘ school

SCOTT KELLY’S EPIC ACOUSTIC TAKE ON NEUROSIS‘ „STONES FROM THE SKY“ AT CRATER LAKE

video frame

Watch the amazing video Revolver magazine did.

Earlier this year Neurosis‘ Scott Kelly took us to Oregon’s Crater Lake, a volcanic caldera lake that draws travelers from around the world for its clear waters and intense blue color. It’s a place that Kelly loves and regularly visits, drawn by its peacefulness and beauty. During our visit there, the singer-guitarist performed a solo unplugged rendition of „Stones From the Sky,“ a classic cut off his band’s 2001 album A Sun That Never Sets.

We present the performance here as episode 2 of our „No Distortion“ series, which features heavy-music artists switching off their amps, stripping down songs and showcasing their more introspective side. WATCH IT!

Riffrelevant.com live review on Scott Kelly ACCOMPANIED BY JOHN JUDKINS & live video

Video Frame

“Kelly is primarily known for his day job in the legendary band Neurosis, as well as in acts like Shrinebuilder, Mirrors for Psychic Warfare, Corrections House,Tribes of Neurot, Blood & Time, etc. Thankfully, I was hip to the stripped down, minimalist music he creates alone, as well. The profoundly poignant content he manifests as an individual, or within the set up as Scott Kelly & The Road Home, is a soul-searing testament to his earnest talent.
(…)
As for the people in attendance, the significance of our collective, communal-like experience was evident. Complete silence hung like a haze during these songs. No one dared utter a word as we stood transfixed, only applauding as each came to an end.
(…)
There would be a fantastic sonic representation of the varying periods of output from Kelly’s solo legacy, as songs “The Wash Of The Sea” and “Endless” from 2016’s “Push Me Onto The” EP were played. There were returns to the 2012 album (…), as well, with “The Sun Is Dreaming In The Soul” and “We Let The Hell Come”. The ladder was delivered with sections of undiluted aggressionchanneled, via electrified instrumentation and performer angst.”

– Pat “Riot” Whitaker, RiffRelevant.com on Scott and John’s live performance in Asheville, August 12th, 2017. To get a more in-depth look on Scott and John’s performance, please see the full live review here.

MPM announces signing of ex Downfall Of Gaia mastermind Peter Wolff for Label & Booking

Foto Peter Wolff Promo

Today we are really happy to announce the signing of ex Downfall Of Gaia mastermind Peter Wolff who will join the My Proud Mountain label & booking Family.

Peter will release his first solo album „Repeat“ in January 2018 and play first solo shows in January supporting Scott Kelly of Neurosis.

Repeat was recorded from Peter Wolff beginning of 2017. Produced, Mixed and Mastered from Peter Wolff and Timo Neuscheler at Chaos Compressor Club / Hamburg.

Scott Kelly on Roadburn 2017: Razors in the Night

Roadburn-2017_RitN

Scott Kelly
on Roadburn: Razors in the Night

Many of you have heard already. We are still without words about this project so we use the Roadburn announcement:

RAZORS IN THE NIGHT (BAIZLEY, KELLY, ADAMS, SARBA) TO PLAY A SPECIAL SET OF CLASSIC PUNK SONGS AT ROADBURN 2017
As John Dyer Baizley’s curation has unfolded it’s given us an insight into the twists and turns of his own musical make up, and waved a defiant flag for those bands that refuse to conform or play by the rules.
The final band to be announced for Baizley’s curation tick both those boxes with a firm, bold cross. We’ll leave it to him to explain what Razors In The Night is all about…

“For a few years now, a few of my friends and I have been talking about creating a special set for Roadburn; a covers set that pays homage to the seminal music we listened to and played, long before we started playing heavy music, or metal. Music which, however buried it is within the current sounds of our bands, is in fact the life’s blood and beating heart of what we do.
“Music that was an critical guidepost regarding how we approach our music, our art, and the world at large. Music that taught us to question everything, settle for nothing, and encouraged us to follow each of our own individual ambitions and directions, regardless of how contradictory they may have seemed to those around us.
“Without Punk, there would be no Baroness, no Neurosis; and I know so many other bands out there that come form the same place. Though it’s style was, at times simplistic and blunt, punk’s ideology and musical execution was at heart sophisticated, straightforward, no-bullshit; and it spoke to that purely instinctual part of us, which often needed a powerful and effective tool to help us express ourselves in a world we often felt at-odds with.
“Scott Kelly (Neurosis / Corrections House), Pete Adams (Baroness / Valkyrie), and Marek Sarba (Insuiciety / Baroness & Neurosis Road-monster), and I are thrilled to be playing a set of our favorite classic punk songs on the Het Patronaat stage on April 22.
“For those of you familiar with classic 80’s punk, you will almost certainly know these songs, please come out and sing along with us – it’s always been about community. And for those of you unfamiliar with that era of punk, please come check out a cross-section of those songs and bands that defined our early years of musical discovery. You don’t need to tune down to be heavy.”

Razors in the Night will perform at Het Patronaat on Saturday, April 22 as part of John Dyer Baizley’s curation at Roadburn.

„At some point, when you’ve kind of earned some recognition and there’s a general idea in people’s mind, what you do, and what to expect form you as a band, it’s really easy to just stay in a comfort zone, musically. But I think that we actually tried to step outside a bit form that, and at some level, try to do something different than people expect from you. Maybe it’s more brutal at some parts, more direct and harsh. We try to escape the so-called post-rock thing.” – Janis Burmeisters about “Ghost”

Author & Punisher: new EP And new label: Relapse Records

a3965006157_16

AUTHOR & PUNISHER begins a new chapter this year with a self-released EP, Pressure Mine, which he describes as “dark and heavy, yet harnessed and restrained, with a focus on rhythm and deep full bass textures from all analog sound machines”. The EP is currently available for streaming in its entirety via Noisey at this location and can be purchased via Bandcamp here.

We are also happy to inform you about the official signing of the one-man industrial metal force to Relapse Records.
After releasing five full-length albums in a little over a decade AUTHOR & PUNISHER – named “one of the most prolific acts in aggressive music,” by Noisey – will release his next full length early 2018 on Relapse Records.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER elaborated on the signing and his new machines:
“It’s an honor to join the the label that has been providing the soundtrack to most of my adult life. With a new gear arsenal and the backing of one of the kings of the underground, something special awaits.
2016 and 2017 have been very unique for AUTHOR & PUNISHER retooling mechanically and sonically. In the pipeline for years but only now coming to life, the latest machines, GRIDIRON, are made up of a number of reconfigurable manual/physical units, each intended to couple with a separate piece of analog gear, and give unique control over it. The force feedback from the interaction of machine components and materials, coupled with the integrity and quality of scrutinized analog sounds, is meaningful and powerful. Whether harshly rhythmic or dissonant, these are relatable in ways that programmed sequences often aren’t. This new exploration is an attempt to work with one foot within rhythmic framework of existing analog drum sequencing, while dragging a tire iron on the railroad spikes.”

NEUROSIS ANNOUNCE EUROPEAN LIVE SHOWS THIS SUMMER

Neurosis_Summer Tour 2017_Online Flyer

Neurosis continue to announce live shows in support of their lauded eleventh studio album, Fires Within Fires (Neurot Recordings) as today we reveal a handful of festival and other live appearances in July.

LIVE SHOWS:-
Sat 01.07.2017, DK – Roskilde, Roskilde Festival – Roskilde, Roskilde Festival
Sun 02.07.2017, SE – Stockholm, Kraken & Wolfbrigade & Author & Punisher – Stockholm, Kraken
Mon 03.07.2017, SE – Gothenburg, Pustervik & Author & Punisher – Gothenburg, Pustervik
Tue 04.07.2017, FI – Helsinki, Tavastia & Dark Buddha Rising –  Helsinki, Tavastia
Wed 05.07.2017 IS – Neskaupstadur, Eistnaflug – Neskaupstadur, Eistnaflug

„There is a deep energy and there is effervescent force…Neurosis play as if they have cracked the secret of punk itself, revealing that the truth of speed is slowness (take note accelerationists), and that high, taut voices and trebly guitars are just pitched up versions of the howls and bass that lie beneath.“ – WIRE

„a revelation“ – METAL HAMMER

„Just like their live show after the departure of Josh Graham, Neurosis became rawer, more hardened and even simpler in a way, following the cycle-closing ‘Honor Found In Decay’. ‘Fires Within Fires’ is their shortest and most concise record since ‘Pain Of Mind’, but at the same time it’s one of the deepest, most memorable and dynamic of an illustrious, world-changing career that has celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. Only five songs, but as one full piece they unleash the spontaneous, exploding-star kind of energy that Neurosis, and no one else, are capable of creating.“ – TERRORIZER

„The Oakland five piece are on flawless form this evening, creating a sonic experience that enraptures as it crushes. They are a formidable presence, shifting from one song to another with machine like precision. A set stripped of the band’s more ambient soundscapes highlights just how skilled Neurosis are within their craft. Most bands would crumble under the pressure of having one of their key elements taken away, however, Neurosis prove that they are able to deliver no matter what the circumstances, and that every dynamic of their sound is expertly executed. Closing with classic ‘Through Silver in Blood’, tonight has been a truly humbling experience and proof that, after three decades, Neurosis are still very much at the top of their game.“ – AVE NOCTUM

„The power of Neurosis is an undeniable fact.“ – ECHOES AND DUST

MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE INTERVIEW: SANFORD PARKER

Interview: Mirrors For Psychic Warfare

I’d rather be broke, but free than work for some fucking asshole. I haven’t had a boss in 20 years and I want to keep it that way.

Sanford Parker has been involved in Corrections House, Minsk, Buried at Sea, Two from the Eye, Bloodiest, American Heritage, Circle of Animals, The High Confessions, Nacht Mystium, Twilight, your solo project, producer, mixer, recorder,….and the list goes on. Together with Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, he is also making music with Mirrors for Psychic Warfare, who are currently on tour in Europe. When they played in Antwerp recently our writer Dave Mace caught up with Sanford to talk about making music, playing live, touring and much more.

(((o))): Where do you keep finding the energy?

Sanford: I don’t do anything else actually, you know what I mean. I don’t have any other hobbies than music.

Either playing, writing, recording or producing. I’m having a hard time sitting still. I always have to be doing something. I always have to be moving. It’s like on a vacation, I cannot even relax then. Hell, I even eat standing.
I always have these ideas that I want to work on. I love all sorts of music. I’m getting inspired by different bands and genres.

When I hear something cool and I think: “Oh wow! I want try this or maybe add that”. At the moment I’ve got like a 100 of bands in my head that I haven’t been able do yet.
Or it’s me and a collaboration with a person or it is just an idea that I get. I start working on it and then it becomes something. There is a lot of stuff that I have done that never became anything. But I have this drive that I just have to be doing something.

(((o))): Like exploring and combining different aspects of genres?

Sanford: Yeah, you see that is the cool thing. Being a producer you get to work with other musicians all the time. I am constantly watching them and picking up on things they do. Picking up what the guitar player does, the way they set up or play.

Then I think: “that is a cool idea. Maybe I take that and put it into something I do”.
That is how Circle of Animals started. I was fucking around with bands, taking a four bar loop and keep on looping it in a repetitive way [makes drum loop noises] and then I thought: “this could be a new song”. That is how I did it. I took some drummers where I worked with, started cutting up their songs into loops .Then I would arrange them and make a song of it. So actually the drums for Circles of Animals are all pre-recorded drums that I re-sampled.

(((o))): There is such a wide spectrum of projects where you are involved in, that hasn’t been done before.

Sanford: See that is the thing. I am a fan of everything and doing the same thing over and over again doesn’t interest me. I am always looking for new stuff to do.

(((o))): Is that your life’s philosophy?

Sanford: Pretty much yeah. I am happier when I’m creating something. Pushing myself, putting myself in unfamiliar situations and then force myself through it.

(((o))): I think your solo project is a perfect example.

Sanford: Yeah, the solo thing is cool because I can do anything I want. There are no limits or boundaries. I wanted to create a project based on hip hop rhythms, but all the other noises were industrial based.

(((o))): I also felt a certain Godflesh, early Scorn vibe on the track ‘Your Feral Blood’, which is on your solo album. Are they influences?

Sanford: Oh yeah, Mick Harris is a big influence for a very long time. I am also a big fan of Kevin Martin, Adrian Sherwood, people like that are my main influence for the solo record.

(((o))): Are you also into techno?

Sanford: No, not so much. I have been to the parties, but that is not my scene. I am more into down tempo hip hop, dub and also some dubstep is involved. I am not so much into the typical 4/4 stuff. But with Corrections House you can definitely hear techno influences, only not during the whole song.

(((o))): How does your overall creative process work?

Sanford: It all starts with an idea in my head.

With Mirrors for Psychic Warfare it went different. See, normally Mirrors was only a Scott project. When we were on a Corrections House tour he was working on some of the tracks during downtime. It got too big for him to do it all by himself. So he asked me to get involved. He basically send me all the tracks he had to that point and I took it from there. Pretty much he sent me the base and the arrangements of the tracks. Those were all his work. That makes Mirrors different than all the other projects I am involved in. Now getting forward with Mirrors it’s more of a 50/50 collaboration. We are working on some new tracks and hopefully by the end of the year I will finish the new album. Having only two people involved makes the whole process a lot easier. We just have to fit it into our schedules.

(((o))): How did you find each other, got together and started? Musical chemistry?

Sanford: I started because of a mutual friend. The other guitar player of Buried at Sea lived with Scott at the time (late 80’s, early 90’s). The first time I talked to him was 2002 I think. When a buddy of mine ran a magazine and wanted me to interview Neurosis. It would be an interview with Scott or Steve. I have only done 2 interviews in my life. The first one was with Scott and the second one with Justin K. Broadrick. I told him that I was in a band with Jason and shortly after that we first met when they were recording in Chicago. A few years later we started to meet more often and then the Corrections House thing started.

(((o))): So there was a certain musical chemistry?

Sanford: Yeah totally man. Musically we are so on the same page. It’s insane. When I say let’s do this, he says great! We share the same ideas. It’s perfect.

SanfordParker_3

(((o))): What would be a collaboration you would like to do in the future?

Sanford: Well Justin Broadrick and I are talking about making something early industrial. (Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle). The problem is getting together and drop all the other things that you are doing is difficult. But yeah, that would be something I look for. I got to work with, Alex Hacke from Einsturzende Neubauten and I would love to work with cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy. That would be a fucking dream.

(((o))): What are you experiencing/feeling when you are on stage with Mirrors for Psychic Warfare?

Sanford: I just kinda trance out. I just go with the repetitiveness and the drones. There is not going on in my head at that moment [laughs]. Which is nice because it’s the only time there’s no activity in my head. That is a moment where my brain can take a break.

(((o))): A question for the gear heads. What kind of gear do you use on stage with Mirrors?

Sanford: I always use the same gear. It’s all based around Ableton. In most of the projects I use the same gear. Sometimes I add a synth or a few synths or another sound source. But all the rhythms are programmed in Ableton. Mirrors and Corrections are different from others since there is a song structure. With my solo project there is the a basic structure that is on the record. When I have a live performance with my solo thing live I remix that basic structure on the fly. It will sound different every time I play it. Which is cool because I can change the set according to my current mood and the audience.

Eventually my idea is to have 3 different sets that I can choose from. A chill set, a hard set and something in the middle. So I can vibe off the crowd or what I am feeling at the time and change my set on the spot. I will have more variations and take it to more and different venues. I’ve been playing this set a lot and when I get home I will make sure there will be more variations possible. I’m already working on 6 or 7 new tracks and I am hoping to finish my new solo record by the end of this year.

(((o))): It’s like you said, you cannot sit still.

Sanford: [Laughs] No, I really can’t. It’s impossible.

(((o))): You already mentioned working on a new Mirrors for Psychic Warfare album. Will we hear a new track tonight?

Sanford: Yeah we are going to play a rough sketch of one of the new tracks tonight. We had an idea and we put it in the set tonight, but if will sound different every night.

(((o))): What are the things in life that make you happy?

Sanford: I get that asked a lot. Recently I had an email interview and that question also popped up. I understand why it’s been asked, but I never think about it. That thought never enters my mind. Also the question: “how do you feel after the release of an album?” We just make the music for ourselves. Something that we like. I don’t think about what others think or like. If they dig it: RAD! If they don’t, I totally understand. Mirrors for example is hard to swallow. It is challenging. It’s not something for everyone. We make the music we like and we don’t let opinions influence that.

With Corrections it was the same. Not once one of the four of us ever said: “hey, let’s make it sound like this.” No, we were just four guys getting together and formed a band. The music just came out of it. There is a natural flow. I’ll try this.. hey cool, I will do this… wow that sounds fucking weird and we liked it. It all started coming together and fell into place.

That is also sort of how all my projects end up going. I get an idea and I go with that. The song will write itself. Once you start rolling the ball, the song will take it where the song wants to go. In my solo project it starts with having an idea that I take from there. In the end it might sound totally different, which is fine. In that case, it’s the way it was meant to be.

(((o))): Can you force yourself to go into the studio and start composing? Or do you have to be in a certain zone for that? Caught by a vibe?

Sanford: Ideally I would like to be caught by a certain mood. But that is not always the way it goes down. Sometimes I only have 3 days in between 2 albums that I’m working on, so I have to get something done. On moments like that I have to force myself which is a completely other way of writing. It’s interesting and it is just as effective, but it’s weird. It is hard.

(((o))): What do you value most in life?

Sanford: Freedom…. to do whatever I want. No bosses. Nobody telling me what to do. I’d rather be broke, but free than work for some fucking asshole. I haven’t had a boss in 20 years and I want to keep it that way.

(((o))): What are the most precious gigs you’ve played?

Sanford: Every time I play at Roadburn! It’s amazing. Hell I would love to play there every year if they would let me. I think I have played Roadburn 5 times with four bands in 6 different shows.

(((o))): How is the tour going so far?

Sanford: Great! This is our fourth night over here. Touring over here is so different than in the States. Europeans appreciate music on a whole different level you know. The venues treat us way better than in the US. We always get to do a soundcheck. We get a place to stay after a gig. We are getting great food and people are taking good care of us. In the US we’re happy if they serve food… and if we get it with a discount. Complete different story in Europe. In the US you are on your own. You just show up and if you are lucky, you will get a soundcheck.

(((o))): So touring in the US is an investment for you?

Sanford: It is! Over here we could rent a van, book a flight and everything and still make some money out of it. But not in the US. On this tour of, I think 23 days, we have 2 days off. One of those days is a 10 hour drive day, so you can imagine that this will be a hard day for me. Sitting still all day long… being forced to be in a passive mode. That’s also the part I hate of touring. I can’t work on music and shit like that. Just staring at the window and trying to sleep. Sitting and waiting. I hate that.

(((o))): Luckily you can release that internal beast of boiling energy on stage the evening after that long drive.

Sanford: That is the thing that makes it all worth. That 1 hour, 1.5 hour on stage is the reason why I do it.

(((o))): Will we hear some of your vocals on the new upcoming album?

Sanford: Maybe. They don’t really sound like vocals, but we have some recordings.

(((o))): Where are the Mirrors for Psychic Warfare lyrics based on?

Sanford: The idea of MK Ultra (the government’s mind control project), experimenting on animals… that’s all started it. I didn’t stick with it. But most of the lyrics are based on that.

(((o))): So the lyrics are actually based on the name of the band: Mirrors for Psychic Warfare?

Sanford: Yeah [laughs]. They basically are.

(((o))): You’ve mentioned experimenting on animals as a lyrical theme. Do you have a favorite animal?

Sanford: Well, I love my dog and I think owls are fucking awesome. They’re rad. One of the species has eyes that look like a galaxy. That one is the shit!

(((o))): Thank you so much for helping me losing interview virginity since you were my first one.

Sanford: [laughs] I know how you feel. I did my first one with Scott and I was nervous as fuck. Thank you for this face to face interview. I never liked email interviews. I always question my reactions and then delete my responses and type them over again. It doesn’t read very well so I really prefer this set up. Thanks for this man.

SanfordParker_1

Short live review of their show at Het Bos in Antwerp:

If the album speaks to you, you really have to see them live. There are no words to describe how intense a show of Mirrors for Psychic Warfare is. You just have to feel and experience it.

My heart was still pumping like crazy from excitement of the interview and at some points during the show I even thought I would get a heart attack. The bass was so low. Cutting its way through everything. I felt my shirt and pants shake to the rhythm of the repetitive drones and drum sounds.

Over and over again. Layer on layer working its way to a certain climax. You could feel it coming. You could tell when hell would break loose as soon as Scott turned his back to the audience and headed towards his amp to create feedback.

Strobes started kicking in. If there were epileptic people in that venue… We could have spotted them on the floor.

Job well done Sanford and Scott. Thank you for this experience.

Neurosis‘ Scott Kelly & members of Amenra Join Forces as Absent in Body

Stream the meditativly heavy new collaboration between Kelly, Colin H Van Eeckhout, and Mathieu Vandekerckhove

Scott Kelly is a busy man, and so are the collected members of Amenra; both parties have an ever-growing number of musical and artistic projects going at all times, and the fruits of their varied labors never disappoint. Given the sonic and spiritual similarities between Neurosis and Amenra, it’s hard to believe that the twain had never really met in a recorded sense before, and I’m sure I’m far from the only fan who’s wondered how such a meeting would play out. Now, thanks to a well-timed suggestion from a storied Belgian record label, we’re about to find our answer.

Listen to the album-slash-track in full below, and read on for some thoughts from its creators. Absent in Body will be made available on limited-edition vinyl come January 20 on HypertensionRecords.

Scott Kelly of Neurosis told Noisey, „Absent In Body was born out of friendship and mutual artistic respect. It’s something that came very naturally to us in midst of all of our individual and collective creative processes. I’m extremely proud of this song and I look forward to the three of us exploring the world sonically in the future. Hopefully this will all result in us getting Absent In Body onto the stage at some point down the line.“

Mathieu Vandekerckhove (Syndrome/Amenra) commented, „Ralf of Hypertension asked us if we wanted to be a part of [the label’s] The Abyss Stares Back series. The plan was basically that Scott Kelly and I were going to release a split; we played a few shows with our solo projects and then we came up with the idea to work together as a collaboration. We exchanged ideas over the internet and so together we built this creation; later we asked Collin to join this project.

We will definitely do further work on this project, The Abyss Stares Back was just the trigger. We are working on a full length album, and in the future we will play shows.

Colin H Van Eeckhout of Amenra and CHVE about the project: „I joined AIB when I was on tour with Scott last year (January 2016), where Mathieu worked from home and sent through audio every day. And we mailed stuff hence and forth throughout the tour then we got together to record when we played Belgium. And again six months after that when Neurosis played Belgium in the summer ’16. It is definitely a project we want to follow up on, since now we did this right amidst the writing processes and recordings our main bands, but we all felt the need and urgency for AIBs existence.

Mirrors For Psychic Warfare released their self-titled debut – a sonic manifestation of insomnia, complete with the tossing, turning, and perennial dread that comes with facing a new day – in 2016 via Neurot Recordings. The five songs that comprise Mirrors For Psychic Warfare lurch and pulsate across a sullen, desolate landscape with an almost curious obsessiveness. You can hear in full at their bandcamp.

Anyone who has lowered their ear into the chasm of sound between metal and industrial in the last couple of decades will most likely have come into contact with Parker’s work. Perhaps through the bands and projects in which he is or has been involved as a musician: the doom-prophesying powerhouse Buried At Sea, the extreme-sound fraternisation, Corrections House, or perhaps the doom/post-metal shamans Minsk. Or maybe via the sheer volume of the releases to which he skilfully brought his very own toxic sound as a producer or sound technician. In this capacity, the name-dropping begins with Pelican, Eyehategod, Rwake, and Voivod and carries on far beyond YOB, Lair Of The Minotaur, and Wovenhand. In many cases (Minsk, Corrections House, Twilight, YOB, Blood Ceremony), he even combined the two areas of activity in an interdisciplinary radicalisation of sound both through the amps and behind the mixing desk.

In a way, this material is the translation of doom into the methods of electronic music. A concept work of cross-genre, dystopian music that builds on the loops and sequencer programs of industrial, but shuns purely linear song structures in favour of instrumental storytelling, the development of which expands a track into an entire world of sound. In the process, Parker knowingly invokes American and British industrial traditions, but equally, his microscopic detail work – primarily observable in the harmonics – could easily have come from German avant-garde electro institutions such as Raster-Noton or Mille Plateaux. These ideas manifested themselves in his solo album of this year, Lash Back, which imposes itself on the contemporary extreme music scene like the black monolith in Kubrick’s Space Odyssey – unassailable, incomparable, and perfect in form. Listen to the record in full at bandcamp.

ABOUT MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE:

„Parker’s ability to invoke foreboding tones and textures enhances the ritualistic features, bringing MPFW closer in line with Jef Whitehead’s defunct project Lurker Of Chalice than Corrections House…the psyche rattling tension they maintain is as unnerving as it gets.“ – METAL HAMMER

„Imagine a broken mirror on the floor, one shard catching your eye, reflecting a warped, spectral veil emanating from those motherships when at rest, like exhaust pipes slowly bellowing, and a mist created by gradually subsiding engine heat.“ – ZERO TOLERANCE

„Kelly and Parker deal in a form of debased, defeated industrial future-folk, a zoned-out space cluttered with crunching metallic debris. Some of the quieter moments skirt the dreaded dark ambient category – but that subgenre always seems to suggest hokey cyberdelic techno-sabbats or the Hellraiser sequel in which chief Cenobite Pinhead sashays around on a spaceship. By contrast Mirrors For Psychic Warfare seed concerns about depleted stocks of tinned food and the likelihood of typhoid.” – WIRE

ABOUT LASH BACK

„Sanford Parker shedding layers until there’s only his bare heart exposed – heart, as in a dark powerful engine, an inhuman mechanical contraption pumping oil to his moving limbs.“– TERRORIZER

„As if to ask how much more sonic punishment you can take, Parker saves his most abstract piece for last. The charmingly-titled ‘Sheep Slaughter’ verges on the sadistically nightmarish sounds of noise artists such as Prurient, although it does include quieter, calmer gaps in between the barrages of nastier noises. Thanks to this metal interloper, electronica just got a whole lot heavier.“ – THE PLAYGROUND

„Sanford has found yet another genre that he is able to master and make his own.“ – AVE NOCTUM

„Lash Back is not a welcoming record. There aren’t many comparable acts who are so visceral and angular, but it’s a rewarding listen and another success for Parker, who has found another avenue in which to excel. For anyone following his work this is more than worth your time, and for metal fans who are intrigued by electronic music, this may scratch an itch you didn’t know you had.“ – THE MONOLITH

AMENRA ‘Alive’ acoustic tour on the horizon and side project news

amenraalive-724x1024

Following the release of Alive – AMENRA’s live acoustic album recorded at Ancienne Belgique (Brussels, BE) – the band will, for the first time, dedicate a full tour to their acoustic sounds by wandering these breathtakingly solemn sonic invocations across Europe during February 2017.

Entirely stripped back from their electric mass, these shows offer AMENRA at their most vulnerable yet an overwhelming sense of beauty, dark tranquillity and mindful rest blooms in their acoustic congregations, as those who have already witnessed shall attest to. The first round of dates are listed below, having experienced this at Roadburn earlier this year, we implore you to join AMENRA on these occasions:

AMENRA ALIVE ACOUSTIC DATES 2017
17/02 – Oberhausen DE, Drucklufthaus
18/02 – Berlin DE, Lido
19/02 – Gdansk PL, B90
20/02 – Warsaw PL, Progresja
21/02 – Wroclaw PL, Firlej
22/02 – Prague CZ, Futurum
23/02 – Innsbruck AT, PMK
24/02 – Milan IT, Santeria Social Club
25/02 – Lausanne CH, Les Docks
26/02 – Karlsruhe DE, Jubez
17/03 – Leeuwarden NL, Neushoorn
18/03 – Eindhoven NL, Effenaar
19/03 – Utrecht NL, Tivoli

Alive was initially released in April at Roadburn Festival 2016, where the band adorned the Tilburg masses with an acoustic set of which you can now watch in its entirety. The release also comes seven years since AMENRA’s first acoustic release – 2009’s Afterlife EP. A counterpoint to the band’s Mass series, Alivefeatures brand new compositions and cover songs, as well as appearances from special guests and additional musicians. Mastered by Frederic Alstadt, AMENRA show that heaviness and darkness does not always require significant amplification but can be found in our own mindfulness, reflectiveness and an honesty to the self.

In addition to the full Roadburn acoustic set linked above, you can further get a taste of AMENRA’s acoustic guidance with the video for the stripped version of Mass IIII’s ‘Razoreater’, an eight-minute insight into a 2015 acoustic show at Saint-Jean Church (Fribourg, CH) and a cover of Flemish folk artist’s Zjef Vanuytsel’s “Het Dorp”.

AMENRA are ever prolific, expanding their sonics into the collective that is the Church of Ra. Outside of AMENRA itself, vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout has a new live solo release, 10910, incoming November 11th with pre-orders going live on October 3rd via Consouling Sounds. Inspired by his latest studio release, RASA, CHVE found these tracks manifested organically and distinctively once on stage. 10910 was recorded in one take during a busy Saturday afternoon in Ghent (BE), immediately being cut to vinyl afterwards. Mixed by Aaron Harris (ISIS, Palms etc.), mastered by Frederik Dejongh (CHVE, The Black Heart Rebellion, Syndrome, etc.) and the visual art direction comes from a collaboration between CHVE and Tine Guns. You can catch CHVE live during November, will the full list of dates being found at CHVE’s official Facebook page.

Guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove has also recently released a new LP under his solo moniker Syndrome, entitled Forever and A Day aptly following his 2012 release Now and Forever (both via Consouling Sounds). His instrumental, intricate and introspective journey continues with this new release, consisting again of one song that taps in meditative yet dark drones, ambience and melody. Syndrome shall lend support to a handful of dates on the November Alcest/Mono European tour in addition to solo shows, with a full list at his official Facebook page.

Fellow guitarist Lennart Bossu has further seen a new record break dawn of day with the hardcore/black metal crossover outfit Oathbreaker. The highly anticipated Rheia is enticingly unique and takes a great leap forward for the quartet with its concoction of seething sonic twistings, melodic hummings and impenetrable atmospheres, out now via Deathwish Inc. The band are currently supporting Skeleton Witch across the US whilst the Rheia release tour travels across Europe this November/December with Wife in support – all dates can be found at the Deathwish Inc. website.

MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE AND SANFORD PARKER ANNOUNCE EUROPEAN TOUR

mirrors-1080-tourdaten

Mirrors For Psychic Warfare have announced plans to return to Europe in January 2017, following a jaw-dropping performance at Roadburn Festival earlier in the year. Along with Sanford Parker, who will also be performing his solo experimental electronic set. There are 22 shows in all, including a visit to the UK, starting on January 12th in Hamburg – and you can watch a trailer for these dates below…

„Sanford Parker she dding layers until there’s only his bare heart exposed – heart, as in a dark powerful engine, an inhuman mechanical contraption pumping oil to his moving limbs.“

– TERRORIZER

On September 23rd, Neurosis take a dominant leap with their eleventh full-length, Fires Within Fires. Three decades in the making, and following 2012’s Honor Found In Decay, the album is a testament both to the history and future of Neurosis. In true Ouroborean style, Fires Within Fires gives due to its predecessors while progressing forward into the unfamiliar and formidable. Striking the band’s signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, dense sonic heaviness and reflective space. Fires Within Fires is succinct, raw and deeply soulful, an all-encompassing reminder to all that transfiguration in sound remains their most commanding and inimitable strength. Our first and only glimpse of the music on this record, prior to release date, is sampled in a new video which has emerged, here you can also marvel at the exquisite album artwork from the renowned Thomas Hooper…

CVLT Nation streams Sanford Parker solo debut album Lash Back

Exclusive Full Stream: SANFORD PARKER ‘Lash Back’

If you haven’t read Sanford Parker’s name a few times on CVLT Nation, then you clearly haven’t been paying much attention. He’s a member of the amazing Buried At Sea, makes music alongside Scott Kelly in Mirrors For Psychic Warfare as well as Corrections House, former member of Minsk and Nachtmystium, co-runs War Crime Recordings and has done production and engineering on more bands that I care to name. So how stoked are we that Sanford is releasing his debut solo album, Lash Back, today – especially when we get to share the full album with you below! He did everything from writing and recording to production and mixing, and the result is an apocalyptic soundscape of crushing avant-garde industrial mayhem! You can order Lash Back via War Crimes Recordings on their webshop or via their band camp or at www.myproudmountain.com in Europe

Scott Kelly plays the Gravedigger in “Hamlet,” now playing at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Hamlet

Scott Kelly plays the Gravedigger in “Hamlet,”now playing at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. But there’s something else: Throughout nearly all of the play, looking up from the audience toward the Elizabethan Theatre’s “heavens,” you see Kelly, an enigmatic figure, surrounded by musical instruments and bathed in a deep-red light. Kelly’s music provides a psychological resonance for Hamlet’s inner monologues with an occasional duet with Hamlet on electric guitar. I saw the first preview, and the undercurrent of music intensifies the emotional impact of the language. Before joining the cast of “Hamlet,” Kelly spent eight years as an OSF sound technician. A gifted musician, Kelly often tours internationally with his heavy metal band, Neurosis.

EH: When did you know you wanted to be a performing artist?

SK: I was focused on music at a young age. I was driven by it. I started out playing music mainly inspired by punk rock. That was how I learned. It was the kind of music where your emotion mattered more than your skill level, at the onset. If you felt it, you could get up and do it. I slowly learned. I taught myself how to play through the course of that, through touring, and being exposed to the world and other musicians. My initial influences were bands like Black Flag and Black Sabbath and early Pink Floyd. Then I came across Miles Davis and Hank Williams and more obscure underground stuff, noise music, and avant-garde music. I like some hip-hop music. I like Wagner, Prokofiev; I like the heavy classical stuff, anything that moves me. I like emotion-driven music. I don’t like cookie-cutter stuff. I’ve got to feel it in the words or the music. It could be (the poet) Charles Bukowski, to me he’s very musical. I just need to feel it.

EH: So that’s why your music and “Hamlet” make a good match.

SK: It definitely wasn’t my idea. I was approached about it by Paul James Prendergast, who is the Co-Composer of the show. He said, ‘The director has this idea of what she wants to do. I told her about you, and that you’re here, and that you have this history, and that you’re professional and can do this.’ She did some research on what I had done previously, and really liked it. They came up with the idea to link the Gravedigger with Hamlet in the show, and therefore to put me in a speaking role.

EH: What’s so special about live performance that some of us make it our lives?

SK: It’s a shared experience. If it’s done right, everybody in the room surrenders. The actors and the musicians surrender themselves to the art that they are portraying. The audience surrenders themselves to the portrayal of the art or the music. It creates this symbiotic relationship, this circle that then can build and build and build, and ebb and flow, and hopefully crescendo at the end.One of the many things (that is so genius) that Lisa Peterson directed into the play: The moments of light and comedy thrown in, to create that ebb and flow. There are moments that are really funny in the show, where you’re not really expecting them to be. And then there are these very ghostly moments. Then it comes to the end, and the intensity level ratchets up. They are fighting for their lives out there. You can really feel it. It’s fast and it’s physical. Wow.“Hamlet,” by William Shakespeare, directed by Lisa Peterson, plays through Oct. 14 in the Allen Elizabethan Theatre. For tickets to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, visit www.osfashland.org or call the box office at 800-219-8161.

Neurosis: more album details emerge and artwork is revealed for their eleventh opus, Fires Within Fires

Neurosis-Fire Cover

Of all that humankind has inherited through our ancestry, no single language has transcended every age as powerfully as music. For thirty years, Neurosis have formed an unbreakable union, channelling that inheritance of sound with great command and authority. Showing their discontent with convention from the very beginning, Neurosis revealed what would become an instinct for transformation in sound and scope. Their sound has become interchangeable with vision of the conscious and unconscious, coexisting in an infinite audial spectrum. A vision that challenged not only the constraints of what listeners, and indeed the band themselves expected, but of themselves as beings. Going beyond the remarkable, Neurosis have become unforgettable.

The journey of their music has found the band relishing the unpredictable, embracing the unknown and exploring the possibility of where the music was capable of taking them. This year finds Neurosis taking a dominant leap with their eleventh full-length, Fires Within Fires.

Created by Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, Jason Roeder, Noah Landis, and Dave Edwardson. The album features exquisite album artwork from the renowned Thomas Hooper and the stellar recording work of the group’s longstanding engineer Steve Albini. We are proud to reveal the artwork and track listing for the album below…

Fires Within Fires is the next powerful step towards a destination that has long been and continues to be the very heart of „becoming“ for Neurosis.

LATVIAN TRIO TESA TO RELEASE THEIR GHOST LP VIA MY PROUD MOUNTAIN – PRIOR TO LIVE DATES WITH NEUROSIS IN AUGUST

Tesa-Ghost_Cover web

Latvia’s Tesa operate with evident conviction, and their flourishing, distinct sound is the epitome of how grand and graceful guitar-driven music can be. Since 2005, the trio of Karlis Tone, Davis Burmeisters and Janis Burmeisters have created a mature, rapturous vision of heavy music without the constraints of genre, reverting to their trusted intuition to create the glorious movements that can challenge any of the founding figures of longform rock with depth.

GHOST, their latest LP formed of five segments for each letter, will see physical release (in CD and 2xLP format) through My Proud Mountain on 5th August, and it is a phenomenal demonstration of the band’s gripping adaptive approach. With the assistance of James Plotkin’s mastering (he who has worked with Sunn O))), Electric Wizard, Earth, Michael Gira, Tim Hecker and many more),GHOST sounds loud and important played at any volume, and the palpable passages of suspense and subsequent devastating releases give the record a momentum that endures all 40 minutes. Most spectacular is the apparent ease in which all three members, working together so closely, supply heaving riffs, emotionally exhausting melodies and soundscapes, and heroic lively tempo, creating a sound that cannot be named but can be intensely felt. This capacity of theirs to stun has won them the attention of the similarly singular Neurosis, with whom they toured Europe with in 2013 and will tour again with in August (dates below), and GHOST should surely elevate them to a larger plane of exposure that their music can expand in to.

“At some point, when you’ve kind of earned some recognition and there’s a general idea in people’s mind, what you do, and what to expect form you as a band, it’s really easy to just stay in a comfort zone, musically. But I think that we actually tried to step outside a bit form that, and at some level, try to do something different than people expect from you. Maybe it’s more brutal at some parts, more direct and harsh. We try to escape the so-called post-rock thing.” – Janis Burmeisters /Tesa on GHOST

Sanford Parker is striking out on his own with Lash Back, a full length record on My Proud Mountain label on July 22nd

SP_FINAL_COVER web

Sanford Parker

Lash Back

My Proud Mountain

22 July 2016

Sanford Parker is the reputed producer and electronics wrangler behind some of metal’s most exploratory outfits, breaking new territory in his work as a fixture of Buried At Sea, Minsk, Corrections House and Mirrors For Psychic Warfare, and featuring on and producing numerous records from respected names across the experimental spectrum. His trademark paranoid atmospherics slalom from the nuanced to the crushingly direct, siphoning elements of industrial, cold-wave and power electronics to give bleak, brutalist clout to his work.

Now, Parker is striking out on his own with Lash Back, a full length record of mechanical, dystopic, beat-driven menace. Due out on the My Proud Mountain label on July 22ndLash Back is a marked departure from his metallic legacy, retaining some of the hallmarks of his impressive work to date but moving towards a distilled, gruesome interpretation of the electronic world’s darkest operators like Perc, Youth Code and Pharmakon. Scathing kick detonations establish anti-dance rhythms to lose consciousness to, and vast swathes of swarming disintegrated synths wrap around the beats until they obscure all that existed below. Whilst intentionally disorientating and confrontational (with titles like ‘Sheep Slaughter’ and ‘Knuckle Crossing’ underlining his aesthetic), Parker still provides enough coherence and mastery to make Lash Back a record of searing hot excellence, and with tracks like ‘Your Feral Blood’ impinging on Kevin Martin styled earthquake beats, and opener ‘Psychic Driving’ uniformly loud yet majestic like Dominick Fernow, each gap a gasp for breath, Parker has broken into a wicked and characteristic style already.

LASH BACK TRACKLISTING:

1. Psychic Driving

2. Knuckle Crossing

3. Slow Children

4. Low Gaps

5. Your Feral Blood

6. Sheep Slaughter

SCOTT KELLY AND STEVE VON TILL TO COMPLETE THE NEUROSIS EXPERIENCE WITH SOLO PERFROMANCES AT ROADBURN 2016

Unbenannt Neurosis are so much more than a band. At times, they seem to be at the heart of a sentient organism, fully functioning all by itself, with the activities of their members and of the entire Neurot family constituting the remaining organs and limbs of this fascinating creature. None of those activities are more deeply connected and enwrapped around that ever-beatingheart than the solo careers of guitarists/vocalists Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till themselves. Therefore, it is but natural that the Neurosis 30th anniversary celebrations that will take place at Roadburn will also include a typically intimate and profoundly touching solo performance by each of the two musicians. Like Neurosis themselves, and most of their related other projects, it is not the first time Roadburners will have the immense honour and pleasure to witness these two men alone on a stage pouring their souls out, much more vulnerable and naked than usual, displaying their tremendous courage. Both of them performed solo on the European version of their Beyond The Pale event which enriched the 2009 edition beyond our wildest dreams, and Scott had also played the year before, marking the release of his harrowing second album, The Wake. In these last few years, however, much has happened in artistic terms that will make these concerts an equally fascinating, yet decisively different endeavour. Although he had already released two solo records when he first stepped on his own on the Roadburn stage, the bleakly atmospheric Spirit Bound Flesh and the aformentioned starkly minimalist The Wake, Scott Kelly has since been particularly active as a stage performer outside Neurosis, touring Europe and the United States several times, and often in very good company. The much-praised The Forgiven Ghost In Me album, released in 2012 under the moniker Scott Kelly And The Road Home, highlighted the collaborative potential of hissolo work, and achieving a rare balance between the intimacy of a solo work and the possibilities afforded by a band effort. Since then, Scott has frequently played accompanied by The Road Home, which currently consists of the like-minded cohorts that are fellow Neurosis bandmate Noah Landis and „Denver Sound“ legend Jay Munly. He has also participated in a few split releases, as well as contributing three songs to the first volume of the Songs Of Townes Van Zandt collection. It is the sum of all these experiences that we will witness at Roadburn when Scott sits down, quietly, with his guitar, and we bet there won’t be a dry eye in the room when he bows out at the end. Steve Von Till made us wait a little while for the follow up to his superb 2009 album, A Grave Is A Grim Horse, only giving us three songs on that same Songs Of Townes Van Zandt collection in the meantime to stave off the hunger, but every second of wait was worth it when we finally got to hear A Life Unto Itself. Right now, it still resonates deeply within us as much as it did when it was released last May, if not more so – its sparse and starkly elegant mixture of Americana, ancient folk music and psychedelia constantly leaving us pleasantly lost insome figurative deep dark wood. It has the sobriety, the earthy mysticism, the emotional evocative power and same spiritual connection to nature and to forgotten ancient times his two first albums did, As The Crow Flies from 2000 and If I Should Fall To The Field from 2002, but it’s also brimming with surprising electric subtleties which were first explored on A Grave Is A Grim Horse. If we add to this the fact that, alongside his solo work under his own name, Steve also maintains activity as Harvestman, his home-recorded, psychedelic improvised project which he has released three amazing, mind-altering records with (one of them, Trinity,  a very appropriate soundtrack to an Italian horror film), and from which he often performs a few pieces during his solo shows, we can expect a varied, dynamic performance, where the flow of continuity is assured by Steve’s unmistakable vocal and guitar personality. Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till will therefore complete the weekend-long Neurosis anniversary experience with both performances taking place at the Het Patronaat on Friday, April15th. Each of them will be a life unto itself that must not be missed. Roadburn Festival takes place between 14 – 17 April 2016 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. RASA by CHVE

Before CHVE will join Scott Kelly for their up- comming European tour in January there will be some releases and more dates to experience the world of CHVE. Enjoy!

The debut solo album by singer and multi-instrumentalist CHVE (Amenra, Sembler Deah, Harlowe, Kingdom) is set for an December 18th release.

rasa chve

Colin H. Van Eeckhout is best know when he is surrounded by kindred spirits, but now he steps into the limelight all on his own. This first solo album was preluded by a split 7” he released together with Nate Hall. In the meantime however, CHVE crafted his music and transformed it into a whole unique entity. In stead of the folkish singer/songwriter track he premiered back in 2012/2015, CHVE now solely makes use of a hurdy gurdy and his voice as instruments to dig deep within his own self. This is CHVE on his most vulnerable. Just a man, his thoughts, scars and memories, with his voice and his instrument. The album is magnificently produced by Dehn Sorah (Treha Sektori, Sembler Deah), and brings long soundscapes capturing in ambient and droning sounds what lies beyond what can be grasped by words. CHVE started to build his album out of an empty void. He built layer upon layer, and rebuilt and reconstructed to complete his universe called RASA. The album ended up somewhere between folk, drone and ritual. But above all, the album is a conquest, a meditation and it offers an inward journey, between grief and tears. Watch the teaser film HERE. The album is now available to PRE-ORDER HERE for a scheduled release of DECEMBER 18th. AMENRA SCHEDULED FOR TWO APPEARANCES AT ROADBURN; TOUR DATES, FURTHER PROJECTS AND OTHER INFO ANNOUNCED

Amenra_Roadburn Poster

Today we announce the incredible news that the prolific AmenRa shall be performing twice at the renowned Roadburn Festival. With a sonic arsenal behind them that covers a broad spectrum of emotive intricacies, AmenRa are perfectly placed to showcase their diversity at Roadburn 2016. The Belgian band will be playing an acoustic set, with an expanded band of musicians, immediately before Neurosis, on the Saturday, and again will take to the main stage on Sunday night to play an electric set. AmenRa are renowned for the intensity of their live performances; often brooding, always evocative. Over the course of five full-length albums, and numerous split releases, AmenRa have carved themselves a nook in the affections of fans over the past twelve years. Their rhythmic – tribal even – nihilistic bludgeoning interspersed with delicate twists has cemented them as a firm favourite with fans of sludge, doom, drone and everything in between. In 2009 when the band recorded an acoustic EP, entitled Afterlife, and played select shows with this material, they retained their unique atmospherics, but introduced a lighter yet still deeply personal element to their output. AmenRa mastermind Colin H Van Eeckhout explains the motivation behind the EP as “borne out of the idea that we wanted to be able to counsel, speak to and guide our (grand) children long after we are gone”. The performances at Roadburn are currently the only planned live outings for AmenRa in 2016, as they intend to dedicate much of the year to simultaneously writing both a second acoustic offering – this time a full-length release – and the follow up to latest album, Mass V. The band are also scheduled to perform at a series of European dates this autumn, including a date at Amplifest, as well as performances in France and the UK. A band like no other, the sounds of AmenRa are raw, honest and sincere, which often provides a helpful guide to listeners when facing the tribulations of life. With that being said, their live presence is simultaneously visceral yet ethereal, crushing yet cathartic, making these dates not to be missed. The full list of dates can be found below:

AMENRA tour dates:

SUN 20/09: AMPLIFEST, PORTO PO

THU 1/10: DIVAN DU MONDE, PARIS FR

FRI 2/10: L’ASTROLABE, ORLEANS FR

FRI 6/11: BODEGA SOCIAL CLUB, NOTTINGHAM UK

SAT 7/11: DAMNATION FEST, LEEDS UK

SUN 8/11: HEAVEN, LONDON UK

SAT 16/04: ROADBURN FESTVAL, TILBURG NL

SAT 17/04: ROADBURN FESTVAL, TILBURG NL

In addition to writing the follow-up to MASS V MASS VI – the band are also writing their first acoustic full album, in addition to working on film-scores and music for theatre and contemporary dance performances. Always fully engaged with true creative output, the band continues to work on artwork and visuals to accompany their forthcoming releases too. Outside of AmenRa itself, the band further immerse themselves within various sonic endeavours. Comprising of members from AmenRa, Oathbreaker, Hessian and The Black Heart Rebellion, Harlowe is the remnant of several interesting and great musicians who collided at some point in time, leaving us a mesmerizing acoustic album to be released on 28th September. Mastered by Chris Common (Chelsea Wolfe, Pelican, Palms, Le Butcherettes), further information about the collaboration/pre-order info can be found via Consouling Sounds and you can watch a video of the group at this link. Colin H. van Eeckhout’s 2012 7” split with Nate Hall (US Christmas) has further been revamped and shall too be re-released on the 28th September via Consouling Sounds. This new edition comes with a CHVE ft. Claudia Crobatia cover of Mark Lanegan’s “Bombed”. Further information and pre-orders can be found through Consouling. CHVE will also be releasing his first full length solo album, RASA, via Consouling Sounds, in December. CHVE will also be performing live this autumn alongside Syndrome (featuring fellow AmenRa bandmate Mathieu Vandekerckhove) and Ephameron – the full list of dates can be found at the top of this page. http://www.churchofra.com http://www.ritualofra.com http://www.facebook.com/churchofra http://consouling.be/ http://www.neurotrecordings.com http://www.facebook.com/neurotrecordings

Nate Hall (US Christmas) European Tour 2015

NateHall Cover groß

It´s time. Time to listen to good music and support good artists. Go see Nate Hall!!! „The river doesn’t ever stop. It is a continuous bringer of whatever it touches, and whomever is chosen to step within its waters. The first time I heard Nate Hall’s voice I knew that I was hearing something that would haunt me forever. The unmistakable sound of mountains‘ wind and the desperation and anguish of truth and experience. Authenticity isn’t something you can acquire. Either you are or you are not. Nate’s work shows a depth of heart and a pure channeling that you wont come across 10 times in your life. This is the work of the soul that we all know. And the soul that knew us first. You aren’t born into this and you don’t die out of it. This is eternity, and it brings us all to the center of the river that wants us to be here at this moment.“ – Scott Kelly (Neurosis) about Nate Hall

„Matt Pike is guitar god to a generation of bikers, barbarians and beardos, and Luminiferous is one of his finest hours, full of enough gruff He-Man barking and muscular,  Motörheaded riff wizardry to soundtrack Season 666 of Game of Thrones” – Rolling StoneWorld-renowned power trio HIGH ON FIRE released its highly-anticipated new album, Luminiferous, on June 22 via Century Media in Europe. Recorded at Salem, Massachusetts‘ GodCity Studios with producer Kurt Ballou, the record is the follow-up to the group’s 2012 release, De Vermis Mysteriis.www.facebook.com/highonfire www.highonfiresl.bandcamp.com
BLACK TUSK (photo by Geoff L Johnson)
Savannah, Georgia’s heavy-rockin road dogs return to Europe with High on Fire. Black Tusk is a blast of high octane raging Southern rock/metal that merges the classic original backwoods metallic hardcore Black Tusk sound with the newer more polished rock based tunes the band has honed after years on the road with bands like Baroness, Skeleton Witch, Mastodon, Kvelertak and more.Very heavy, fast paced and full of the best extracted portions of rock and roll mixed with the dedication of metal.www.facebook.com/blacktusk www.blacktusk.bandcamp.com

„I haven’t heard anything quite like this all year long, and I’ve listened to damn near a 1000 different albums at this point, mostly good, some great, and a few, like Bask, get the nod as being magnificent“  -Ripple MusicNew record „American Hollow“ out on This Charming Man Records September 18th. Author & Punisher – Melk en Honing

 AP_MelkEnHoning
Today we want to announce the new album of our booking artistsAuthor & Punisher titled „Melk en Honing“.„Melk en Honing” is released on Housecore Records and produced by Philip H. Anselmo, the voice of Pantera & Down.A great record from a great artist. Here you find some press quotes and more info of record and artist below. Author & Punisher will tour Europe again in January 2016 and we hope to see you there.   Press quotes:  ‘Listening to Author & Punisher is always a powerful and illuminating experience, and Melk En Honing sees Shone uniting heaviness with accessibility in ways he never has before. Few artists can make the unpredictable thrive within the repetitive and coax genuine emotion from cold, lifeless steel; when you find one, you had better take a listen.’ (METALSUCKS, Rating 4/5) ‘It’s an active listen though- you can’t just throw this on and go about your day. Really get in there and pick apart thenoises!’ (METALINJECTION) ‘If the Author & Punisher that released Drone Machines was the 800 series Terminator,  Melk en Honing is the T-1000 version and this timeit’s not going to be stopped.’ (THE SLEEPING SHAMAN) ‘Thankfully though, this bleak worldview hasn’t stopped Author & Punisher from becoming one of the most prolific acts in aggressive music, and it doesn’t look like it will slow him down anytime soon.’ (NOISEY/VICE) ‘Melk En Honing is perhaps likely to be one of the most quietly distinctive Metal albums of the year, simultaneously mechanised andsurprisingly human, and is unmistakably the work of a man with a fiercely independent vision that extends far beyond his unorthodox methods and deep into the music itself.’ (GHOST CULT , Rating 8/10)  ‘A haunting, cinematic take on post-apocalyptic art.’ (METAL HAMMER, Rating 8/10)

The Artist Author & Punisher

Author & Punisher is a new league of unwieldy heavy music and live performance. Tristan Shone, the creator and sole artist of A&P, combines an impressive background in mechanical engineering and conceptual sculpture to create what Wired Magazine has hailed as his own “special brand of doom metal.”  As experimental as Shone is at times, with the high fidelity drone so thick and pulsating it lays a sonic lead blanket waving over your core, it lingers only as long as it needs, regrouping or intensifying with pounding live rhythms and vocals.  The sound builds up anxiously but always rewards with a hint of hope in the form of epic sonic phrases leaving you feeling exhausted but satisfied.Abandoning the typical guitar and drums set up, Author & Punisher makes aggressive rhythmic and oscillatory soundscapes from his own custom fabricated and precision machinery.  Designed by Shone himself, the instruments of Author & Punisher are custom devices that begin mostly as big chunks of aluminium and steel that are worked into all manners of wheels, throttles, pedals, and masks to manipulate sound live. Shone’s electromechanical arsenal and physical approach to live production become to heavy music what Survival Research Laboratories was to live, unscripted performance art. After leaving a career as mechanical engineer in Boston to focus on art and sculpture, Tristan Shone created Author & Punisher while getting his MFA in Southern California. In the metal and machine shops of University of California, San Diego, Shone forged a relationship with design, sound and fabrication that ultimately yielded A&P’s first 3 albums and mapped the journey away from traditional instrumentation towards custom made, precision machinery that he calls Drone Machines, Dub Machines and now his series of Masks. All aspects of the A&P sound begin with physical movement, limbs struggling in unison to coordinate a wall of electronic rhythm and oscillation, ultimately conditioned by an organic and loose quality absent of sequencing and plastic perfection. Author & Punisher performances are a real amalgamation between man and mechanisms. They are direct, physical, heavy experiences that have amassed praise and intrigue from a wide array of audiences. Pitchfork styled him “immediate but mysterious,” Stereogum described his “chilling, unrecognizable form,” and NPR hails him as “a thrill [who] fires on all cylinders.”

NEUROSIS 30th Anniversary shows at Roadburn 2016

NEUROSIS 30th Anniversary shows at Roadburn 2016

My Proud Mountain Booking is overwhelmed by announcing that NEUROSIS will play TWO shows at Roadburn Festival 2016. There is nothing more to say than the official Roadburn announcement states below. Enjoy, Ansgar, Joy & Rike

NEUROSIS
Roadburn 2016 Will Host NEUROSIS’ 30th Anniversary CelebrationsRoadburn Festival is elated to announce that our spiritual brethren from NEUROSIS will celebrate their 30th anniversary at the 2016 edition of the festival. The iconic, California-based band have planned just two events to mark this career milestone – one of which will be in San Francisco (March 4 & 5 at the Regency Ballroom), the other at Roadburn. „To be invited to celebrate our 30th anniversary in Europe at Roadburn is an absolute honor. Roadburn is a treasured and unique event that embodies the spirit of open minded community and original, emotional heavy music. We are humbled to be a part of it again“ – NEUROSIS,  August 2015. NEUROSIS will in fact perform twice at Roadburn 2016 – as headliners on both Saturday 16 April, and on Sunday 17 April. The two sets will span the band’s entire career, showcasing NEUROSIS’ comprehensive evolution from their primitive beginnings to the seminal, epic outfit they are today –the band’s ever evolving, sonic palette has become a template for underground music over the last three decades, and resist genre classification. Starting on Saturday night, and when closing the festival on Sunday night, NEUROSIS will delve into tracks from their entire discography – from debut release Pain of Mind right through to 2012’s Honor Found In Decay. Each set will be completely different, and each album will be explored, allowing the band and the audience alike to revisit various parts of the band’s history. NEUROSIS are very much a part of the tapestry that makes up Roadburn’s legacy; the announcement of their first headline slot at Roadburn 2007, marked a stylistic shift for the festival. It’s the origin of what Roadburn has become today – artistically and musically. Having NEUROSIS to curate Roadburn 2009, and bringing the European version of Beyond The Pale to the festival, was our humble way of honoring their enormous contributions to the evolution of heavy music. Over the years, we have also played host to many NEUROSIS-linked side and solo projects, as well as bands that nestle under the Neurot Recordings label umbrella. Now, with the band celebrating their 30th anniversary at Roadburn 2016, we feel that the festival finally has come full circle – there isn’t anyone more attuned to the atmosphere and energy of Roadburn than NEUROSIS, and offering them the opportunity to the celebrate their 30 years of existence at the festival, is a heartfelt tribute to their iconic style and sound that has influenced us all so much. Roadburn Festival takes place between 14 – 17 April 2016 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Ticket announcements will follow in due course.

Bringing a new approach, a Family, a truly revolutionary plan of attack to the world of underground music. Songs of Townes van Zandt 10″

TVZ_Cover_zebraDear Friends: Following the overwhelming success of My Proud Mountain’s first release, Songs of Townes Van Zandt with Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till and Wino, the label have since been inundated with questions about the next instalment in the series, and flooded with offers from bands to be part of it. It seems the urge to spread the word about Townes Van Zandt continues to extend into more musical circles, his name always mentioned in reverential tones. My Proud Mountain have responded to the wishes and have put together another dream team for the second Songs Of Townes Van Zandt release which will see the light of day later this year. Taking on the dutiful challenge of covering Townes Van Zandt’s music this time will be John Baizley, singer and guitar player of Baroness, Nate Hall from US Christmas, and Mike Scheidt from YOB. Each musician approaching their favourite songs in their own personal way, paying homage to the original recordings and finding new ways to convey these well known songs and to deliver their lyrical content. In the interim, My Proud Mountain have created something extra special for Record Store Day 2013 on 20 April in the form of a collectible 10″ LP featuring four Townes Van Zandt songs – two unreleased songs and two previously released material also. Track-listing and annotation below: Side A: John Baizley – If I Needed You – first outtake from “Songs of Townes Van Zandt” to be released in 2013 Nate Hall – A Song For – unreleased a cappella / drone version Side B: Steve Von Till – The Spider Song – taken from “A Grave Is A Grim Horse” by Steve Von Till – released on Neurot Recordings 2008 Scott Kelly – St. John the gambler – taken from „Songs of Townes Van Zandt“ on My Proud Mountain 2012 John Baizley and Nate Hall will continue to support this 10″ and forthcoming full length by playing some shows in Europe, for some a first glimpse of the new material. John Baizley commented on his involvement: “Earlier this year, My Proud Mountain label approached me about contributing some tracks to the second “Songs of Townes Van Zandt” covers collection. While Baroness is preparing to resume touring, I am excited to come to Berlin and play music that our audience may be unfamiliar with me performing. I have always been an admirer and devotee of Townes, and I hope I can come and do some of his songs justice. This will be a unique opportunity for me.” As the next release takes shape we can celebrate and premiere some of the material as part of this exclusive showcase here: John Baizley feat. Katie Jones & Oldseed April 22nd GER – Berlin – HBC (exclusive German Show) http://www.trinitymusic.de/product_info.php/info/p5417_JOHN-BAIZLEY–BARONESS-.html John will take the stage not only to perform his favorite Townes Van Zandt songs but a few solo tracks and interpretations of Baroness songs as well. Musician Katie Jones is going to support John with acoustic instruments like the guitar, violin or cello. Invited along as main support is Canadian artist, and German resident, Oldseed, whose music earnestly touches the hearts of his listeners because it imparts a truth we all want to believe in. Craig (aka Oldseed) remarks: „I’ve been a Baroness fan since first and second came out.  I’m really looking forward to sharing the stage with John as he goes in a more intimate direction.  Should be a memorable evening.“ To give you an Idea about the beautiful sounds of Oldseed check this: http://www.reverbnation.com/oldseed More shows at Roadburn festival 2013:

Release info:

John Baizley, Nate Hall, Steve Von Till & Scott Kelly Songs of TOWNES VAN ZANDT 10″ / DL Release: April 20th 2013 (International Record Store Day 2013) Label: My Proud Mountain

When My Proud Mountain released the first Songs of Townes Van Zandt record with Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till and Wino in 2012 recording three songs each the feedback on this release was mind-overwhelming. More and more people showed up asking about Townes Van Zandt and telling his story. A lot of musicians offered to participate for a 2nd record. By getting John Baizley, singer and guitar player of Baroness, Nate Hall from US Christmas, and Mike Scheidt from YOB recording songs for My Proud Mountain has found another dream team. Each participant focuses the songs and especially the lyrics of Van Zandt in his personal way by reducing the already minimalistic songs even more to their essentials. To support the second Songs Of Townes Van Zandt full length record My Proud Mountain releases a 10″ featuring four Townes Van Zandt songs from different releases on April 20th at the International Record Store Day 2013. Tracklist

Side A:
John Baizley – If I Needed You – first outtake from “Songs of Townes Van Zandt” to be released in 2013
Nate Hall – A Song For – unreleased a cappella / drone version
Side B:
Steve Von Till – The Spider Song – taken from “A Grave Is A Grim Horse” by Steve Von Till – released on Neurot Recordings 2008Scott Kelly – St. John the gambler – taken from „Songs of Townes Van Zandt“ on My Proud Mountain 2012

John Baizley and Nate Hall will underline their support by playing some shows in Europe where they will present songs they recorded for this project. This will be a unique opportunity for me.”

As the next release takes shape we can celebrate and premiere some of the material as part of this exclusive showcase here:
